Just How Dangerous is Raw Sewage?

Morgan Chambers • Feb 03, 2021

Dealing with sewage backups in Frederick MD!

When suddenly faced with a sewage backup in your home, your mind will tell you that you must act. Your first inclination is to grab a bucket and some old towels and get to work on the problem. At first, you may not give much thought to why the backup happened because you know how dangerous raw sewage is and you just want it gone!

Although your actions are noble and your thoughts are logical, you would be very wrong to follow this course of action. What appears to you to be a relatively easy and straightforward mop-up job should never be attempted by anyone but those in the profession of restoration who are trained in handling pathogenic material.

Just How Dangerous is Raw Sewage?

If you think you can do your own sewage cleanup, think about this: When you ingest the vapor that sewage radiates, all it takes is a few breaths and you could become a gastroenteritis patient! That’s right! Then, when your body becomes very sick, you may get a high fever, then begin vomiting, and then, if you do not get to a doctor immediately, death. The contamination factor is so great that it is no longer, “What are the chances I get sick?” but a guarantee that you will indeed get very sick and nobody wants that.

Another way raw sewage might enter the body is through skin contact. When you forget about an open cut on your leg and then start cleaning up sewage, disease can spread through your body much more quickly. An extremely dangerous type of bacteria found in raw sewage is E. coli, also termed Escherichia coli. This type of bacteria which is normally found within the digestive tracts of humans and harmless when in that system, is extremely harmful outside of the intestines such as entering through a cut or a scrape on your skin. Do not get anywhere near raw sewage!

What is Gastroenteritis?

Gastroenteritis is described as the lining of the intestines becoming inflamed when you come in contact with a virus, bacteria, or other parasites. Another more common health concern associated with airborne contamination caused by raw sewage is asthma

Knowing when it’s best to call in the professionals!

Nobody would go out of their way to make themselves or their families sick. Staying clear of raw sewage is the only way to remove the threat of illness or worse. There are many ways that diseases and bacteria might be transmitted. Did you know that hand-to-mouth contact is one of the most common ways for bacteria from a sewage backup to enter your body? It’s true!

Making contact with pathogens and bacteria is as easy as not properly cleaning your hands after touching sewage and then eating or drinking. Something as innocuous as lighting a cigarette or cigar when your hands are not properly cleaned is also an extremely easy way to be infected by bacteria and diseases.

So never take chances with the safety and health of you or your family or employees. Call Restoration 1 Frederick when you see any kind of sewage leaks and backups and stay happy and healthy!
